Having a Hard Time Bending Over? Understanding Hip Problems

The Hidden Connection Between Hip and Joint Pain

Are you struggling to bend over to put on your shoes? Do you feel pain in your knees, groin, thigh, or back? A recent survey by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center reveals that many people are unaware that these symptoms can indicate a problem in the hip.

The survey, which included 1,004 participants in the United States, found that 72% of respondents did not realize that knee pain could be a sign of a hip issue. Similarly, 69% overlooked groin pain, and 66% missed thigh pain as potentially stemming from the hip.

The Importance of Seeking Medical Advice

The Ohio State survey also highlighted that four out of ten people tend to "push through" unexplained pain. More than half (52%) resort to over-the-counter medications to manage their discomfort.

Experts from Ohio State stress the importance of consulting a medical professional if you experience any unexplained pain. A proper diagnosis can help you lead a fuller, more active life.

"Although hip replacement surgery may sound daunting, it's actually one of the easiest procedures to recover from," said Beal, an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Ohio State College of Medicine. "Getting up and walking after the surgery can serve as ample physical therapy for most patients."

Recognizing Symptoms of Hip Problems

The survey revealed that most Americans (71%) are aware that a "catching" or clicking sensation in the hip indicates a potential hip problem. However, a lesser group—though still a majority (59%)—identified difficulty bending or tying shoes as a sign, along with lower back pain (53%).

Here are some lesser-known symptoms that may indicate a hip issue:

  • Night pain or difficulty sleeping (45%)

  • Thigh pain (34%)

  • Groin pain (31%)

  • Knee pain (28%)

Understanding the Impact of Hip Issues

Hip problems can significantly affect your daily life. They can limit your mobility and make simple tasks, like putting on shoes, challenging. Understanding the signs and symptoms is crucial for early intervention and treatment.

The Role of Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can play a vital role in managing hip-related issues. It can help strengthen the muscles around the hip joint, improve flexibility, and reduce pain. Many patients find that engaging in physical therapy post-surgery enhances their recovery process.

Lifestyle Changes for Better Hip Health

Incorporating regular exercise into your routine can improve hip health. Activities like walking, swimming, and cycling can strengthen the muscles that support the hip joint. Additionally, maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the strain on your hips.

When to Seek Help

If you experience persistent pain or discomfort in your hips, knees, or back, it's essential to consult a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent further complications and improve your quality of life.

Survey Methodology

The survey was conducted by SSRS on its Opinion Panel Omnibus platform. The SSRS Opinion Panel Omnibus is a national, twice-per-month, probability-based survey. Data collection took place from June 6-9, 2025, among a sample of 1,004 respondents. The survey was administered via web (n=974) and telephone (n=30) in English. The margin of error for total respondents is +/-3.5 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. All SSRS Opinion Panel Omnibus data are weighted to represent the target population of U.S. adults ages 18 or older.
